A Guide to the Duolingo English Test and Its Importance

What is the Duolingo English Test?

The Duolingo English Test (DET) measures real-world English through a computer-adaptive sequence of tasks that adjust difficulty as you respond. Subscores reflect literacy, comprehension, conversation, and production skills. The graded portion takes about 45 minutes, followed by an ungraded video interview segment (about 10 minutes) that institutions may review for speaking samples. Because the exam is remote, identity verification, room scans, and strict browser rules apply — preparation should include both language skills and familiarity with the interface and rules so test day goes smoothly.

Why the DET matters for university admission

DET scores are reported on a 10–160 scale in steps of 5, with an overall score plus aligned subscores. Many undergraduate and postgraduate programmes publish minimums often in the 100–130 range depending on competitiveness; scores above roughly 120 are widely treated as clearly proficient, though you should always match the exact threshold on each university's list. Scores remain valid for two years. Unlimited score sends to participating institutions are included with the test fee (typically in the mid‑tens of U.S. dollars), which makes the DET attractive when you are applying widely. Always confirm on Duolingo's official programme search and on each university's admissions page that your course accepts the DET — a few highly selective schools still prefer other exams.
